About Fukudaji Temple

Fukudenji Temple is located in Kuzetonoshiro-cho, Minami Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture.

It is said to have been founded by the monk Gyoki in 718 during the Nara period.

During the Heian period, Shune, a famous waka poet and monk, served as the chief priest. Shune's waka is included in "Hyakunin Isshu".

Shakyamuni Buddha and Jizo Bodhisattva are enshrined here. It also enshrines the unique Dragon God and Lady Maya, both of whom were brought over from China.

  • Take the Kyoto City Bus “Special Route 13 bound for Kuga-Ishihara-cho” and get off at the “Shimokuze” stop, then walk for about 3 minutes.
